Learning how to dating the jealous type means having to deal with someone who is insecure and sometimes distrustful. They might demand to read your emails and text messages, and not let you go out with your friends. If they do let you go out, they might call you every ten minutes to find out what you are doing. Sometimes this behavior is a result of your lover having been cheating on in the past, or having overly protective parents or friends.

If you really love this person and you still want to date them, you will have to learn how to discourage this behavior without causing them to be even more insecure. You can help them break the habit, but remember, there are some people that will never change. You can only change your partner if they already want to change themselves.

  1. Have a discussion about it. You need to let your partner know that you intend on helping them overcome this behavior. Let them know that it is not acceptable and you cannot live under their strict rules for the rest of your life. Tell them that it is putting a strain on your relationship, rather than keeping you together.
  2. Do not be defensive. Allow them to look at your cell phone if they absolutely must. If they really feel they need to read your email, allow them to. Hiding messages from them, even if they are not incriminating, will make them more insecure.
  3. Lock your phone. If possible, place a pin code on your cell phone. You have every right to privacy and your partner should only look at your messages when you give them permission. Besides, if your phone is stolen, it should be locked to prevent data theft.
  4. Stand your ground. Tell your partner that they cannot call you when you are out with your friends or family. There is no need for you to have to answer calls five times when you're in a movie theater. If they still call, answer it quickly, but let them know that they are being unreasonable and unfair.
  5. Make your partner feel more secure. Explain to them why you love them and why they are precious to you. If they feel valued and realize that they are in a secure, exclusive relationship, they might realize that they do not need to be so jealous.

Loving someone who is insecure and possessive is something you will learn how to. Dating with some compromises to flaws is something everyone goes through and it is a sign of maturity. If the relationship is worth saving, make the effort. But if you and your partner cannot find a common ground, do not try to force the relationship to work out when it never will.
